Beach City Hoops 2026 Senior Preview: Team Uche Captures Title as Southern California Seniors Shine at Tustin High School
TUSTIN, Calif. - The 2026 Beach City Hoops Senior Preview brought a talented group of Southern California seniors together at Tustin High School on August 16, giving players an opportunity to compete, showcase their games and finish the day in a four-team playoff format.
Rather than simply becoming a collection of individual showcases, the afternoon produced competitive basketball. Team Clarke and Team Uche advanced through the semifinals before meeting for the championship, while Team Nelson and Team Weatherall closed the event in the consolation game.
Several players delivered strong statistical performances along the way, with David Alvarez, Jordan Hampton, Terron Williams, Bryan Blake, Ian Escobar, Imani Young-Smith and Jeovanny Nungaray among those who made an impact.
Semifinal: Team Clarke 77, Team Nelson 73
The first semifinal provided one of the day's most competitive games.
Team Clarke led 38-29 at halftime, but Team Nelson didn't go away. Bryan Blake fueled the comeback with one of the best individual performances of the Senior Preview, eventually pulling Nelson within one, 74-73, after two free throws late in the game. Clarke answered when Shane Stanfield converted a transition basket and the ensuing free throw to secure the 77-73 win.
Blake finished with 29 points, six assists and three rebounds, carrying a large portion of Team Nelson's offense. Peter Egwurube added 13 points, while Tarron Williams contributed six points, eight rebounds and four assists.
Clarke's balance ultimately won out. Dylan Curry scored 16 points, Ian Escobar added 15 points and three assists, and Holden Kelly Pejakovic finished with 14 points and five rebounds. Stanfield added 12 points, while JJ Ward filled the box score with nine points, five steals, three assists and a block.
Clarke advanced, but Nelson made them earn it.
Semifinal: Team Uche 76, Team Weatherall 44
The second semifinal wasn't nearly as close.
Team Uche established control early behind David Alvarez, who repeatedly created offense in transition and off turnovers. Alvarez already had 11 points during an early stretch in which Uche began opening its lead, and by halftime Team Uche had built a 38-22 advantage.
The separation continued after halftime. Alvarez scored inside and from three, while Brennen De La Cruz and Cruz Valdez supplied additional scoring as Uche eventually stretched the margin beyond 30. Team Uche closed the game with a 76-44 victory.
Alvarez was the headliner with 22 points, five assists, three steals, three rebounds and a block. Cruz Valdez added 13 points, Brennen De La Cruz scored 13, and Terron Williams finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
For Team Weatherall, Jeovanny Nungaray scored 10 points, while Obamai Aisuan finished with eight points and seven rebounds.
Consolation: Team Weatherall 76, Team Nelson 65
Team Weatherall bounced back quickly from its semifinal loss and finished the event on a strong note.
The consolation game featured a much more aggressive Weatherall group, particularly in the second half. After the teams traded stretches early, Weatherall created separation behind Imani Young-Smith, Jeovanny Nungaray, Kaimana Levy and Jalen Bain.
Young-Smith produced one of the best all-around stat lines of the event with 18 points and 10 rebounds, while Nungaray added 17 points and three steals. Aisuan scored 14, and Levy contributed eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Nelson received another productive outing from Blake, who finished with 19 points and six rebounds, while Collin Lim scored 16 points with three steals and Tarron Williams added 13.
Weatherall's decisive push came after halftime. Young-Smith scored in transition, Levy and Bain knocked down threes, and Nungaray eventually hit a three to give Weatherall an 11-point cushion late. Nelson tried to respond through Blake and Egwurube, but Nungaray's late three sealed the 76-65 Weatherall victory.
Championship: Team Uche 76, Team Clarke 66
The championship produced the best collection of high-level individual performances of the day.
Clarke entered with several scoring options, but Team Uche's combination of size, playmaking and shot creation proved difficult to contain.
Jordan Hampton delivered his best performance of the event, finishing with 24 points, 10 rebounds and four assists. Terron Williams was equally impactful in a different way, recording 10 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, three blocks and a steal.
Alvarez followed his 22-point semifinal with another strong performance, scoring 21 points with three assists.
Clarke stayed within range behind Ian Escobar, who scored 21 points and handed out five assists. Pejakovic added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Isaiah Cater contributed 13 points, four rebounds and three assists.
The championship remained competitive late, but Uche found another gear. Hampton hit a three to stretch the lead to nine, answered again with a driving layup after a Pejakovic three, and Alvarez then buried a transition three to make it 74-63. Escobar answered from deep, but Alvarez scored again on a second-chance opportunity to close out the 76-66 championship victory.
Team Uche finished the afternoon as the 2026 Beach City Hoops Senior Preview champion.
Scouting Notes and Player Evaluations
David Alvarez - 5’10 - Guard - Santa Paula HS - Team Uche - CAMP MVP: Alvarez was one of the most consistent guards at the event. He scored 22 points in the semifinal and 21 in the championship, showing an ability to attack the paint, create in transition and make plays for teammates. His defensive activity also stood out in the semifinal, where he recorded three steals and a block. He played with good pace and was comfortable creating offense without becoming overly ball-dominant.
Bryan Blake - 6’2 - Guard - San Clemente HS - Team Nelson: Blake was one of the event's purest scorers. His 29-point, six-assist semifinal was arguably the best offensive performance of the day, and he followed it with 19 points in the consolation game. He showed confidence attacking off the dribble and making shots when Nelson needed offense.
Jordan Hampton - 6’2 - Wing - Windward HS - Team Uche: Hampton's championship performance stood out. At 24 points and 10 rebounds, he impacted the game both as a scorer and on the glass. He showed the ability to score off the bounce, get into the paint and step outside for a three when Clarke threatened to make a run.
Terron Williams - 6’5 - Forward - Bishop Montgomery HS - Team Uche: One of the more versatile performances statistically. Williams' 10-point, 13-rebound, six-assist, three-block championship line showed his ability to affect multiple parts of the game. His size, rebounding and passing gave Uche another way to initiate offense without relying exclusively on its guards.
Ian Escobar - 6’2 - Wing - Pacifica Christian HS (Newport) - Team Clarke: Escobar steadily produced across both games. He scored 15 in the semifinal before putting up 21 points and five assists in the championship. He was effective getting downhill, running in transition and creating offense when Clarke needed a response.
Imani Young-Smith - 6’6 - Center - Burbank HS - Team Weatherall: Young-Smith's combination of production and activity stood out in the consolation win. His 18 points and 10 rebounds reflected a player who consistently stayed involved around the ball and helped Weatherall establish a more physical presence.
Jeovanny Nungaray - 6’0 - Guard - Tahquitz HS - Team Weatherall: Nungaray provided perimeter shot-making and defensive activity. He scored 17 points in the consolation game, including an important late three, and added three steals.
Peter Egwurube - 6’3 - Wing - Foshay HS - Team Weatherall: Egwurube brought size, rebounding and versatility to the frontcourt. He showed touch away from the basket, ran the floor and contributed as a passer. His 13-point semifinal performance highlighted a well-rounded offensive skill set.
Collin Lim - 6’4 - Wing - Cypress HS - Team Nelson: Lim showed value as a floor-spacing guard with defensive activity. He knocked down multiple threes, attacked in transition and created turnovers. His 16-point, three-steal performance against Team Weatherall showed his ability to impact both ends.
Final Takeaways
The 2026 Beach City Hoops Senior Preview gave players an opportunity to do more than put up numbers. Four games created different situations - close finishes, comeback attempts, transition-heavy stretches and a championship game where players had to execute against increasingly familiar competition.
Team Uche ultimately had the best combination of scoring, rebounding and versatility. Alvarez provided consistent guard production, Hampton delivered a big championship performance, and Williams affected virtually every area of the box score.
But the event wasn't defined by one team alone. Blake's scoring, Escobar's offensive production, Young-Smith's activity and Nungaray's perimeter play were among several performances that gave evaluators something to take away from the afternoon.
For a senior showcase, that's ultimately the point: compete, produce and give coaches another reason to take a closer look.
